There are various causes of teeth grinding, including stress, anxiety, anger, alcohol or drug use, and some medical conditions. Stress and anxiety are the most common causes, as people often grind their teeth unconsciously to cope with tension and stress. Similarly, anger and frustration can also trigger teeth grinding. Alcohol and drug use can also lead to bruxism, as they can cause muscle relaxation, increasing clenching and grinding.
Medical conditions such as sleep apnea, Parkinson’s disease, and acid reflux can also cause bruxism. Sleep apnea, in particular, can lead to teeth grinding due to the repeated interruption of breathing during sleep, causing the patient to wake up frequently and feel stressed and anxious. Parkinson’s disease can also cause bruxism as it affects the muscles used for chewing and swallowing, leading to involuntary clenching and grinding.
